George Wolfgang Knorr

The specimens for these suberb images were sourced from the most famous European "Cabinets of Curiosities" which featured exotic shells, minerals, fish and animals. Knorr a paleontologist, painter and engraver produced this collection of engarvings in
Nuremberg under the title of Deliciae Naturae Selectae.

This is the very rare folio edition of this highly desirable series.

In 1854 McCoy accepted the newly founded professorship of natural science in the University of Melbourne. He established the National Museum of Natural History and Geology in Melbourne, of which he was director; and becoming associated with the Geological Survey of Victoria as palaeontologist, he issued a series of decades entitled Prodromus of the Palaeontology of Victoria.

These illustrations are from his Prodromus of the Zoology of Victoria, issued in parts from 1878-1890,due to financial costs it was never completed. Many well known colonial artist contributed the illustraions including;Arthur Bartholomew,Ludwig Becker, Edward Gilks, Theresa Poole, James Ripper, Frederick Schoenfeld and
John James Wild.

An important colonial zoology series.
