FRIEDRICH JOHAN JUSTIN BERTUCH

A successful entrepreneur and a man of the C18th Enlightenment. Orphaned at 15 he lived with his uncle and pursued an education in theology and law. He eventually became a publisher and the largest employer in his home town of Weimar. This image is from the first pictorial encyclopedia for children which was a landmark in educational publishing.
Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1747-1804)

Suberb C18th fish engravings from Tableau Encyclopediqu. Bonnaterre was a priest and professor of natural sciences. He was commissioned by the publisher Panckoucke to create the section on fish in Tableau Encyclopediqu. This series depicted over 400 species of fish illustrated by various artists.
George Wolfgang Knorr

The specimens for these suberb images were sourced from the most famous European "Cabinets of Curiosities" which featured exotic shells, minerals, fish and animals. Knorr a paleontologist, painter and engraver produced this collection of engarvings in
Nuremberg under the title of Deliciae Naturae Selectae.

This is the very rare folio edition of this highly desirable series.
