Sydney began its life as a penal colony in 1788.

Transportation of convicts to New South Wales was finally abolished in 1840 and shortly afterwards, in 1842, Sydney was declared a city.

Title	Vue Des Caps du Port Jackson.
Description	View in Sydney Harbour looking eastwards to the Heads from the celebrated voyage undertaken by Dumont D’Urville in the Astrolabe. The purpose of the voyage was to find opportunities for French whalers and to locate a suitable place to establish a penal colony. The ship arrived in Sydney on 17 January 1824 and stayed there for two months. The officers keenly observed the progress of the convict settlement during their stay. Rare first issue identified by it being printed on India Paper and the name, 'J.Tatsu, editteur at lower left'.

	1838 WESTMACOTT
Title	Sydney Cove, Goat Island, Darling Harbour. New South Wales
Description	Very rare lithograph from Westmacott’s 1838 series Six Views which were drawn on stone by Gauci and not to be confused with the later 1848 series titled Sketches in Australia which were drawn on stone by Spreat. The view is taken from the north shore looking towards Goat Island and Sydney Cove (Circular Quay) which should be on the left of Goat Island not on the right as shown. This would have occurred because the lithographer, Gauci, failed to draw Westmacott’s image in reverse when drawing it onto the lithographic stone.

Title	New offices of the Sydney Morning Herald, N.S. Wales
Description	Very scarce lithograph of the Sydney Morning Herald’s office building from Samuel Thomas Gill’s Scenery in and Around Sydney. Originally founded in 1831 as the Sydney Herald, the newspaper was purchased by John Fairfax in 1841 who changed the name to The Sydney Morning Herald the following year. Today, it is the longest running Australian newspaper.

Title	Sydney in 1802
Description	Taken from Alexander Lesueur's engraved map originally published in the official account of Baudin's voyage. From the original edition of the Illustrated Sydney News. The Illustrated Sydney News, which was published from 1854 to 1889 and included a number of high quality engravings to illustrate the accompanying news and articles. It was issued on a monthly basis due to the time consuming process of having to engrave each illustration which would take one engraver between one and two weeks to make each one. Many famous Australian colonial artists and illustrators were employed in the making of them, such as Julian Ashton, Albert Cooke, Charles Conder, Samuel Calvert, Frank Mahony and Arthur Collingridge. The engravings provided a unique glimpse into colonial life, often depicting situations or scenes that were less than flattering, in contrast to the majority of sanctioned views that provided a sanitsed portrayal of life in Australia. Increasingly expensive to produce, the few illustrated newspapers that made use of original engravings for their illustrations, and that survived the economic collapse of the late1880's found themselves competing against the new technology of photographic produced half-tone and lino type processes the illustrations. By the turn of the century most of the illustrated newspaper had closed. Due to their ephemeral nature few have survived.

Title	Captain Cook Proclaiming New South Wales A British Possession, Botany Bay, 1770.
Description	A historical recreation of Cook's landing at Botany Bay. It was from reports that Cook provided to the Admiralty and with Joseph Banks's influence that Botany Bay was selected as a penal colony. Macleod was born in London and arrived in Australia in 1855. Best known as the editor of the ‘Bulletin’ magazine, he also contributed to ‘Punch’. He painted numerous portraits of historical figures and scenes. This engraving is from the Picturesque Atlas of Australasian which was the most ambitious publishing venture in Australian history up to the 1900's. It was conceived and financed by American publishers under the name of the Picturesque Atlas Publishing Co Limited, Sydney and Melbourne. It's ambitious aims of using the best artists, the best paper, the finest printing engraving techniques and for it to be the most comprehensive survey of Australia's colonial history ensured that it inevitably was doomed to be a financial failure.
