One of the earliest and most decorative maps to show the tracks and discoveries of Cook, Wallis, Byron and Carteret. Noted are Cook’s discoveries on the east coast of Australia and New Zealand, Wallis’s discovery of Tahiti, Carteret’s discoveries of Pitcairn Island and his rediscovery of the Solomons which the Spaniard Mendana had sighted in 1568.

Text states that the coast of New South Wales recently discovered by Lieutant Cook on His Majesty’s vessel named the Endeavour in the year 1770 and circumnavigated New Zealand.

Based on Cook’s chart issued in the official accounts of the First Voyage published by John Hawkesworth on behalf of the British Admirality. Decorative map showing Cook's sea tracks of his first voyage made in 1769-70 where he completely charted New Zealand and discovered and charted the east coast of Australia. The map also shows the sea tracks of Commodore Byron with Captain Mouat in 1765 and later Samuel Wallis aboard the Dolphin partnering Phillip Carteret commanding the Swallow in 1767. The large decorative vignette in the lower right containing a number of plants, sea shells, a native in a sailing vessel and a three masted ship which presumably is intended to be a representation Cook’s Endeavour. From a New General Atlas, the map documents the discovery of islands in the Western Pacific. Each island is accompanied by the date of it's discovery and the name of it's discoverer. Australia is shown with Bass Strait but still with an imaginary southern coastline.

Scarce fully hand coloured map of Asia showing Australia with an imaginary southern coast but with Bass Strait. In West Australia Dutch discoveries are noted with the year. As usual the first discovery in 1606 by Janz is not noted. The east coast is mapped according to Cook.

A scarce map with early record of the naming of the continent, Australia.

The name Australia was popularised by the 1814 work , "A Voyage to Terra Australis", by the navigator Matthew Flinders. Despite its title (which reflected the view of the Admiralty), he used the word "Australia" in the book, which was widely read and gave the term general currency. Governor Lachlan Macquarie of New South Wales subsequently used it in his dispatches to England. In 1817 he recommended that it be officially adopted.

In 1824 the British Admiralty finally accepted that the continent should be known officially as Australia.
