VIEWS AUST SA Adelaide

The first recorded European sighting of the South Australian coast was in 1627 when the Dutch ship the Gulden Zeepaert, skippered by Francois Thijssen, examined the western coastline. Thijssen named his discovery "Pieter Nuyts Land", after the highest ranking individual on board. The coastline of South Australia was first mapped by Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin in 1802.

South Australia was established as a commercial venture in 1831 by the South Australia Company through the sale of land to free settlers.

Title	The Rosary, Botanical Gardens.
Description	Hatherell studied at the Royal Academy Schools (RA) 1877–9. He exhibited at the R.A. and Royal Watercolour Society (WS) from 1879, showing portraits, genre and illustrations. He worked for Cassell's the publishers, who sent him to Australia to illustrate Picturesque Australasia. He also worked for The Graphic, and for American magazines.

Title	The Auldana Wine - Cellar.
Description	Shows the inside of what became the Penfolds Grange vineyard at Magill. This engraving is from the Picturesque Atlas of Australasia which was the most ambitious publishing venture in Australian history up to the 1900's. It was conceived and financed by American publishers under the name of the Picturesque Atlas Publishing Co Limited, Sydney and Melbourne. It's ambitious aims of using the best artists, the best paper, the finest printing engraving techniques and for it to be the most comprehensive survey of Australia's colonial history ensured that it inevitably was doomed to be a financial failure. The legacy that it left on the other hand was some of the finest engravings and maps printed in Australia in the C19th.
